Venice Brain Injury Attorney

There are a wide range of injuries from which accident victims can suffer, all of which depend on a number of factors, including the health and age of the victim and the type of accident in question. There are, however, certain injuries that tend to crop up again and again in a variety of different situations. Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), for example, are a common injury amongst accident victims, as they are usually the result of a bump, blow, or jolt to the head, which typically occur in everything from car crashes to slip and fall accidents. Whatever the cause, brain injuries can have devastating consequences for victims, who in serious cases, could suffer permanent disability or even death. To learn more about seeking compensation from the at-fault party who caused your own brain injury, please call our experienced Venice brain injury attorneys today.

TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY DEFINED

Traumatic brain injuries are sudden injuries that cause a disruption in the normal functioning of the brain and are usually the result of a blow, jolt, or bump to the head, or an object penetrating the skull. In either case, the most common causes of the the former involve:

  • Falls;
  • Car crashes;
  • Sports injuries;
  • Being struck by an object; and
  • Explosion-related blasts.

Most penetrating skull injuries, on the other hand, can be attributed to being struck by an object, resulting in a bone fragment penetrating the skull. TBIs can range in seriousness from mild, which involve a brief change in mental status, to severe, which are characterized by an extended period of unconsciousness.

TBI SYMPTOMS

The types of symptoms that a brain injury victim can expect to experience will depend on the type and severity of the brain injury. The most mild TBIs, for instance, which are known as concussions, are typically characterized by a brief loss of consciousness, as well as headaches, confusion, dizziness, blurred vision, a ringing in the ears, and fatigue. Those with more moderate or severe TBIs, on the other hand, may also suffer from worsening headaches, repeated vomiting, seizures, loss of coordination, and mood changes.

Although these symptoms can help medical professionals determine whether a brain injury is severe or mild, the patient will still usually need to undergo a number of tests to confirm the diagnosis. This typically includes a brief physical exam, neurological tests, CT scans and MRIs, and neuropsychological tests. Once diagnosed, a patient will need to undergo intensive treatment, which, for moderate and severe TBIs could include surgery to remove clotted blood, repair skull fractures, and relieve pressure in the skull. Patients may also require special medications to prevent blood clots, as well as muscle relaxants to reduce muscle spasms, and anticonvulsants.

Even after obtaining this treatment, injured parties often require rehabilitative therapies, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and counseling. Unfortunately, obtaining this treatment is notoriously expensive, making it especially important for those whose brain injuries were the result of someone else’s negligence, to speak with an attorney about seeking compensation from the at-fault party.
