Steps to Prevent Motorcycle Accidents in Sarasota

Motorcyclists love to ride their bikes in Sarasota and throughout the sunny state of Florida due to the great weather here and breath-taking views of the ocean. Sarasota is home to Thunder by the Bay, a motorcycle festival which takes place on the Sarasota Fairgrounds, that attracts bikers locally and internationally. To prepare for this event, along with the many others in and around our state, practice these tips to prevent motorcycle accidents. Wear a Helmet Although wearing a helmet may not look as cool to some motorcyclists, wearing one is a life saver. Many people wonder if wearing a helmet is a part of state law. In Florida, you are given a choice as to whether you want to wear a helmet or not if you meet certain requirements. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FHSMV), there is an exception to wearing a helmet if you meet these requirements:

  • At least 21 years old
  • Carry an insurance policy with at least $10,000 in medical benefits
If you do not meet these requirements, according to Florida Statute Section 316.211, you are required to wear a helmet. Regardless of your age, we always recommend motorcycle riders to wear a helmet. In the event an accident occurs, wearing a helmet shows that the bike rider cares about safety. Ride the Best Bike for You Ride the bike that is best for you, your body type, and riding style. A sports bike may not be the best bike for you if you’re looking to ride up the coast. You may want to ride a cruiser instead. If you’re just starting out, get a beginner motorcycle. Bikes come in several shapes, forms, and sizes. Different designs require different riding styles. Take time to get familiar with riding a motorcycle and then adjust your riding style accordingly. Take a Riding Course Whether you’re a novice or long-time bike rider, a bike course can improve your riding skills and allow you to gain more experience. Bike courses also teach safety practices and show you how to ride safely and avoid accidents. Reduce Speed When Necessary If the roads are wet, slow your speed down just as you would in a car. Take it slow when you’re going down a hill. Motorcycle riding can be a fun activity, but safety always comes first. Follow Traffic Laws Do not weave in and out in the middle of lanes or split lanes. Do not pop wheelies or drink and ride simply because you’re riding an easy, comfortable cruiser. Be sure to stop at all stop signs and red lights. Being a motorcycle rider does not make one invincible. Furthermore, if you are operating any motorcycle whose engine size is more than 50 cc, you are required to have a motorcycle endorsement on your driver license or hold a ‘Motorcycle Only’ license in the state of Florida. Otherwise, you are breaking the law. If you or a loved one becomes injured in a motorcycle accident in Sarasota or Bradenton, Call Hale Law at 941-735-4529.
